Charles Finney, one of the most well-known evangelists of the 1800's, lead revival meetings that drew hundreds of people to salvation in small towns in America.

Many preachers talk about the anointing that was on Finney's life as being the reason for his effectiveness in bringing souls to the cross. However, the real secret of his results come from the fervent prayer of his main prayer warriors: Daniel Nash.

The best summary of Daniel Nash's life and ministry has been compiled in an article by Pastor Paul Reno of Hagerstown, Maryland, USA.

One important note about Nash's prayer ministry needs to be stated. Nash and those who interceded with him would often pray, travail and groan for hours, and even days, apparently forsaking food and rest for the sake of praying for the salvation of souls.

Certainly, his personal zeal and fervour are an inspiration to us as intercessors.

While this sounds like a noble and godly mission, I would suggest two things that I believe would have made Nash's ministry--and our prayer ministries--even more effective.

First, interspersing times of praise and worship with sessions of prayer help to keep us from becoming too over-burdened and heavy in the ministry of prayer. Starting with praise and then worshiping God periodically during prayer keeps the saints' eyes on Jesus instead of focussing continually on the burdens, problems or issues that we are praying through.

Also, taking time to eat, rest, praise and laugh during extended times of intercession helps to keep the body and mind in top shape, because we carry this treasure of God's holy presence in these earthen vessels of our human bodies.

Nash died just six years after he started travelling with and interceding extensively for Finney. After his death, Finney gave up on travelling evangelism meetings and took up a teaching post at a Bible college. The revival meetings ceased.

So, let's read about and learn from Daniel Nash's powerful prayer ministry, while looking to balance the work of the ministry with proper care for these temples of our bodies, so that we can run the race before us and make it to the end.

Be encouraged as you pray for revival in your town and country, and be blessed as you fulfil your mission...while we still have time.
